CANON POINT: End of Bayonetta 2
AGE: 602 years old as of 2014, appears to be in her late twenties.
BACKGROUND: Character wiki, first game plot summary, second game plot summary.
PERSONALITY:
"In the innocence of our childhood, we used to play together as friends. But as time passed, perhaps even my eyes were clouded with fear."
As the heir to a once powerful witch clan, Jeanne holds herself as someone worthy of the Umbra throne: elegant, driven, and prideful. As such, she often comes off as terse and almost condescending in conversation, never hesitating to speak her mind and has little to no patience for idle chatter. However, she has no problems with being evasive and cryptic when she feels it is necessary and prefers to keep her own goals to herself unless there is something to be gained otherwise. Outwardly, Jeanne's decisions occasionally contradict her cool and regal demeanor, as well as her tendency to make rash choices (a trait that she's apparently had for centuries), but she always knows what she's doing. Never losing sight of her goals, Jeanne is usually one step ahead of everyone with a confidence that almost comes off as arrogant, and she does not willingly hand over control of her plans. She has her own method of doing things and she'd like to keep it that way; anyone who would disagree or otherwise criticize her methods would be met with imperious condescension and the business end of her guns.
But that's just scratching the surface. Beneath that cold and distant exterior lies a warmer and kinder side that comes out whenever Jeanne is around the people she cares for most. She's extremely loyal to those individuals as well as the principles that she grew up with, and one can trace this loyalty all the way back to the 16th century witch hunts in Europe; perhaps even further back — it's hinted throughout the game that she is likely the saint Joan of Arc. As the heir apparent of the Umbra clan, Jeanne carries the duty and responsibility of maintaining the balance of darkness and light in the world, upholding their laws and traditions even if it requires her to make difficult choices as a result. Due to her status, Jeanne was isolated from other children and Cereza (later known as Bayonetta) was perhaps her only friend. However, Cereza was also the "Left Eye" (one who possessed half the power of creation itself) and thus, one of the true targets of the witch hunts. In an effort to save her friend and keep her away from Balder, an act that required her to stab Cereza's heart, Jeanne sealed her away along with the Left Eye and was left to wander the world alone for the next 500 years. These five centuries of isolation left Jeanne with a determination to protect what little she had and ultimately, what she is. To let the Umbran legacy vanish from the world would be a fate worse than death, and the same could be applied to those she cares for. Time and again, Jeanne willingly puts her life on the line for Cereza: whether it's to pull her out of a sacrificial ritual to summon the creator of the world, or to prevent her soul from getting pulled to hell.
Jeanne's fighting style is often alluded to be a reflection of her aggressive, independent nature as well as her desire to push herself to her limits. This is seen in quite a few flashbacks where she takes on new challenges even if they may go against tradition, such as befriending Cereza and later on challenging her to prove her worth as the next heir despite it being taboo; or even choosing to wear couture Italian fashion in lieu of the traditional Umbran uniform. Jeanne tends to walk the line between conventional and rebellious, and despite her sense of duty and responsibility to her clan, she nonetheless values her individuality as well as the freedom to be able to do what she wants how she wants to. Even after being brainwashed by Balder, Jeanne's independence doesn't disappear as she's usually seen arguing with the angels when she chooses to test Bayonetta in her own way. Ironically, her choice of profession during her downtime is a mild-mannered history teacher to German high school students.
At the end of the day, Jeanne is stubborn and ambitious, but possesses a compassionate and kind heart. Getting to that compassion and kindness might take some work, but once she deems someone worthy of that kindness, they will have a steadfast friend for life."Do not fear your fate. Stand, Cereza. Stand and open your eyes. For with every truth, there is another one to be seen."
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Jeanne is an Umbra Witch who specializes in dark magics and can form pacts with demons, giving her a large variety of powers such as temporary time manipulation, shape-shifting, and extraordinary strength and speed. Jeanne has a pact with the demoness Madama Styx; through the technique called "Wicked Weaves", she can use her hair as a conduit to summon the limbs of Styx (and her entire body, on occasion) to attack her enemies while granting her immense resilience and strength. She can also summon various Infernal demons using different Enochian chants, as well as ancient torture devices to finish off her enemies. For the purposes of this game, Jeanne will not be able to summon other Infernal demons and will only summon Styx's limbs separately.
Jeanne's main weapon of choice is guns: a set of four called All 4 One. Each gun has its own individual name (Athos, Porthos, Aramis, D'Artagnan) and she wields one in each hand and on her feet. Umbra Witches are masters of the Bullet Arts, a style of fighting that utilizes guns which requires the user to be extremely flexible and have fast reflexes, due to its combined nature of ranged and melee combat. However, they also become weapons masters by extension through intensive training. Throughout the game, Jeanne has access to multiple weapons including and not limited to: swords, scythes, hammers, bow and arrows, and whips. Due to the nature of her magic, Jeanne has the ability to traverse Purgatorio, a parallel dimension undetected by humans. She can observe everything that happens in the human world in Purgatorio, and whatever objects are damaged in Purgatorio, they will be damaged in the human world as well. Although she is invisible to humans in this parallel dimension, she is still visible in mirrors, to cats, and to those with significant magical powers. For in game purposes, she will no longer have this ability.
Outside of combat, Jeanne has a vast and extensive knowledge of alchemy, chemistry, and medicine, which she uses to create compounds in the form of lollipops she can consume to heal herself or enhance her overall abilities. Additionally, she is shown to be able to break magical barriers by blowing a kiss, use telekinesis (her eyes will glow red), and is fluent in most European languages with some familiarity in East Asian languages.
